Lightyears

| Christoph Hochhäusler

A contemporary thriller set in Berlin’s media community. Handsome cynic Fabian Groys, in his mid-thirties, knows that  information is always a political commodity.  But as a streetwise pragmatist, he feels invincible. At the big news magazine he is working for, he is considered a rising star and he seems to hit gold again with a new story about a toxic waste scandal. Following some tricky research with his newly assigned trainee Nadja – less than thrilled about working under his macho tutelage – the pieces come together beautifully – too beautifully, maybe. Shortly after the story breaks – creating quite a stir among the political establishment – Fabian has to realise that a lobby has played him. Not only was his picture incomplete, an important link in his story appears to be fabricated. Furious, he tries to set the record straight and clear his name, but his enemies not only have endless resources but also are very hard to pin down. For a long time, his struggle seems to have only one result: the devastation of his career. It’s the combination of Nadja’s wits and Fabians guts that finally bring him to “the other side”. But the lobbyists turn out to be … journalists just like him, working for hire, with no interest in “the bigger picture”. The answers to the oldest of all political questions: “who benefits?” seem as elusive as in the beginning, when Fabian decides to fight the lies – with lies of his own. His fabrications trigger a chain of events that soon get out of control…

A film about the war beneath the surface of „public opinion”, where nothing is what it seems.
